Physical infrastructure is central to the development of any nation, shaping mobility, water security, urban growth, sustainable housing and economic productivity. In Kenya and Africa in general, where rapid urbanization, climate
challenges, and technological advancements are reshaping development priorities, Civil and Environmental engineering plays a pivotal role. The Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Kenya-AIST) prepares Master’s and Doctoral students to meet these emerging needs by training scientistic and engineers to design and develop systems that are not only functional, but also environmentally responsible, climate-conscious, socially and economically beneficial.”
The Civil and Environmental Engineering postgraduate programs at the Kenya-AIST are structured to develop engineers and researchers who can drive Africa’s transition toward sustainable and resilient infrastructure systems. These programs integrate scientific rigor, technological innovation, and real-world applicability, preparing graduates for leadership in a rapidly evolving engineering landscape.
The programs emphasize multidisciplinary learning, advanced analytical skills, and researches that align with national and continental aspirations, including Kenya Vision 2030 and the Africa Union Agenda 2063.
Through rigorous coursework and practical research, the programs equip graduates to becomes innovators, problem-solvers and leaders capable of shaping sustainable infrastructure and contributing to Kenya’s and Africa’s long-term development goals. Supported by modern laboratories and computational facilities, students engage in specialized training and research across the following thematic areas:
Environmental Engineering
Transportation Engineering
Structural Engineering
Water Resources Engineering
