NUCLEAR ENGINEERING

The Kenya-AIST Nuclear Engineering programme draws on international best practices—especially from benchmark institutions such as KAIST—and aligns closely with national development strategies including Kenya Vision 2030 and UN Sustainable Development Goals 7, 8, and 9.

Students are immersed in three core research areas:

  • Nuclear System Design and Safety: Students learn the fundamentals of designing and maintaining nuclear systems, with an emphasis on reactor safety, thermal hydraulics, and control systems. This specialization prepares engineers to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations of future nuclear facilities in Kenya and across the region.

  • Nuclear Materials and Fuel Cycle: This area focuses on the entire fuel lifecycle. Students explore nuclear materials enabling innovation and sustainability.

  • Radiation Measurement and Protection: A critical field for all nuclear professionals, this specialization equips students with expertise in ensuring public and environmental safety in both research and commercial reactor operations.
